DURATION
Two years full-time

INTRODUCTION

This course has been developed in conjunction with Munster Rugby to enable participants to improve their skills and knowledge to prepare them for a career in Rugby Union. The course is mostly practically orientated and allows the participants to learn about all aspects of the game as well as improve their own ability to play the game and improve their fitness and conditioning for rugby. The course also involves theoretical aspects such as rugby theory and also provides a chance to gain Munster Rugby coaching qualifications over the two year course.

Year 1

FETAC Level 5

Year 2

Having successfully completed 1st year, qualified students have the option of going on to Year 2 of Coach Education or applying for a place in Higher National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. Places are limited and entry into the Higher National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science is based on academic performance and on interview.

BTEC Higher National Diploma

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Generally Leaving Certificate or equivalent. All participants are interviewed, and places are awarded based on suitability. All applicants must have a letter of recommendation from a recognized club or IRFU or Munster Branch or equivalent.

Certification

  • National Certificate - in Sport and Recreation FETAC Level 5 (Award code:DSRXX)
  • Occupational First Aid
  • IRFU/IRB Coaching Certificates Level 1
  • IRFU/IRB Refereeing Qualifications

  • Advanced Certificate in Sport Development and  Coaching FETAC Level 6 (Award Code DSDCX)

  • Water Safety (All Levels): optional
  • Pool Lifeguard: optional
  • Coaching Awards (Relevant Governing Bodies)
  • NCEF Certificate in Exercise and Health Fitness (University of Limerick)
  • Personal Training (University of Limerick)
