DURATION
One year full time
INTRODUCTION
This course is aimed at those who wish to work in either the Fire Service or Ambulance service.
Learners who successfully complete this one year FETAC level 5 certificate course will gain essential knowledge and skills in areas relevant to these careers and it is envisaged that this course will improve graduates chances of recruitment to either the Fire Service or Ambulance Service.

Year1
Students will study at least 8 modules from the following selection
- Occupational First Aid
- Safety and Health
- Exercise and Fitness
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Water Safety and Lifesaving
- Communications
- Word Processing
- Work Experience
- Applied Psychology
- Applied Maths
- Emergency Department Care skills
*Optional Certification and Possible areas of Study
- Cardiac First Responder - PHECC (The Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council) standard for Automated External Defibrillator use
- Emergency First Responder (EFR) incorporating Defibrillator Training - PHECC standard
- Fire Warden (Fire Safety and Fire Extinguisher Training)
- Breathing Apparatus
- Fit for Fire (Fitness Assessment Preparation)
- Industrial Hazardous Substances
- Manual handling
* These optional certificates will incur additional costs.
- Emergency Medical Technician - PHECC standard for the National Qualification
Students who successfully complete the FETAC Level 5 Certificate may be able to progress to enter a programme of study to become an Emergency Technician.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Specialist Industry practitioners and trainers will deliver the additional training and organise work placement and visits to relevant industries.

NCEF Conversion Course is expected to be offered to students who obtain the following criteria at a cost of €815 (May 2011 price).
CRITERIA: Successfully completion of all three modules: 1) Occupational First Aid 2) Exercise and Fitness 3) Anatomy and Physiology
PRIORITY will go to second year students.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Each student will get practical experience while working in areas such as private ambulance services, industrial fire services and related industries. Relationships can be built up between employers and students which can lead to full-time employment on completion of the course.
