DURATION
One Year Full-Time

INTRODUCTION

The discipline of software development draws on many aspects of modern computing including programming, mathematics and object technologies. This course has been structured to educate students in the fundamentals of designing and testing integrated software applications for IT and web-based environments.

MAIN AREA OF STUDY

The emphasis of this course is on the application of programming techniques as they apply to applications, IT systems and Internet web sites. Students undertake study in the following modules:

Year 1
• Computer Architecture
• Computer Programming (Java)
• Software Development (Visual Basic)
• Windows Programming (Visual Basic)
• Web Authoring
• Database Methods
• Mathematics
• Communications

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates seeking entry to this programme should ideally have a minimum of a pass in Mathematics at Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate and display an active interest in computer programming. Some experience with computers would be advantageous. All prospective candidates will be interviewed individually and places will be awarded on merit.

WORK EXPERIENCE

All students are expected to participate in mandatory work placement in a relevant industrial or commercial environment. Note: It is the student's responsibility to secure a suitable work placement position.

There are a number of possible job opportunities for students with a solid programming background. The key areas of employment include:

• Junior Programmer
• Software Developer
• Web Site Design/Maintenance
• IT Support

FURTHER EDUCATION

This course links directly to the 'BSc Computing (CR016)' degree at CIT. Limited entry to other courses at Institute and University level subject to college matriculation requirements. In recent years, previous students of the Software Development programme have also been accepted to undergraduate programmes at UCC and various certificate/diploma programmes at WIT and DIT.
