INTRODUCTION

The Government health strategy for the long-term health improvement of the Irish population will required trained personnel in the Health Promotion area. There is and will be a growing need for more Health Promotion Personnel in various sectors such as regional health authorities, schools, colleges, community centers etc.

This Human Health Science & Health Promotion Course is suitable for individuals who are interested in the health care area and promotion of healthy living and lifestyles.   This is a one-year full-time course designed for those who wish to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the fundamentals of health and health promotion.

This course will also assist students to gain admission to Irish Third Level Colleges like UCC, the Institutes of Technology, and to some third level colleges the UK.

SPECIAL FEATURES

This one-year course is an excellent foundation in the Science subjects relevant to the health promotion area while also offering a practical and theoretical introduction to the area of social issues & practice.

WORK EXPERIENCE

One day a week in the food or health care related industry.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Students who study this course are eligible to apply for many courses in Irish Third Level Institutes. As this course is part of the "Links Scheme" for entry into third level colleges, students thus gain entry to these linked courses based on their FETAC rather than their Leaving Certificate results. Examples of these courses include

  • Public Health and Health Promotion
  • Social Studies
  • Nursing
Course participants are also eligible to apply to suitable courses in UK Universities

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Leaving Certificate standard is desirable but not essential.  All candidates are interviewed and places are awarded based on suitability. Mature students are welcomed.

  • National Certificate - FETAC Level 5 in Community & Health [award code: DCHSX] or
  • FETAC Level 5 in Nursing Studies [award code: DCHSN]
  • Occupational First Aid
