DURATION
One year full time.
INTRODUCTION
When seeking employment these days it is important to have as
much experience as possible in the area of work you wish to pursue.
This course provides students with a broad range of skills in
Carpentry and Joinery.
MAIN AREAS OF STUDY
Carpentry and Joinery (Theory and Practice)
Students are instructed in the skills and practices of working
with various types of wood. Strong emphasis is placed on the theory
aspect.
Wood Turning and Carving
Students who show an interest in these aspects are given
the opportunity to develop the required skills.
Timber Technology
In this area of study the student becomes familiar with
different types of wood. Identification, growth and structure
of a tree, conversion and seasoning.
Drawing, CAD and Mathematics
Includes skills of draughting in both manual and computerised
drawing. Mathematics are of a practical nature.
Care, Use and Safety of Hand Tools,
Portable Tools and Fixed Woodworking Machinery. Hands
on experience is given in dealing with wide variety of tools and
machines.

SPECIAL FEATURES
In the college workshop students have access to a large range
of woodworking machines both portable and floor standing. During
the course, field trips are organised.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Students will have the opportunity to work in the woodworking
industry for a minimum of one day per week during the course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Leaving Certificate or equivalent. Mature students are most
welcome to apply. All applicants will be interviewed and places
are awarded on suitability.

• National Certificate - FETAC (NCVA) Level 5 in Construction
Technology (NCVA award code:CCONT)
