Art & Design

DURATION
Year One

introduction

Design Studies is a foundation course in art and design.  Beginners will be expertly guided through projects giving them a thorough understanding of the design process.

The course (formerly known as Access with Design) is a well devised programme to allow students the opportunity to fully explore their creativity while learning in a supportive environment.

Core drawing and design skills are presented at an introductory level.  Students will gain confidence in their ability to apply newfound creative design skills to unique artworks.

Design Studies follows set projects which encourages personal exploration of the environment and a thorough investigation of the visual elements.  Guidance will be given throughout the course on gathering primary research through observational drawing and field trips.  Sketchbook work and good studio practice is emphasised on the course.  The design principles are central to projects in mixed media, fabric, paint, printmaking, and combined materials.

Art and design history is integrated into project work and gives students an excellent foundation in design and a contemporary context for their ideas/ work.

Progression:
Design Studies enables students to produce a cohesive collection of work/ portfolio which demonstrates their creative thinking and personal development.  Students who successfully complete Creative Design Studies can progress for further study for FETAC Level 6 courses or Third Level.

Work Experience:
There is an in - house work placement programme for Design Studies.  This gives students an opportunity to plan and design a group exhibition or site specific piece for public display.   We have strong community links and have been involved in a number of reputable projects since 2002.  For example, the LifeLong Learning Festival, Art Trail, Cork Printmakers, the Cork Opera House, St. Finbarres Cathedral, The Cork Textile Network, The Presentation Secondary School and the Cork City Libraries.  A site specific group project for public display in the Cork University Hospital, 2012.
